Modified starch and Adhesives ~ Starch and derivatives ~

Like cellulose, starch is a complex polysaccharide which occurs naturally in plant roots. Usually, the plants are corn, wheat, potato, rice, tapioca and sago. Starch composition: amylose and amylopectin ratio and particle size vary with its plant source. Modified starch manufacturers, ZIH MAO, adjust their manufacturing processes to suit industrial adhesive need. Starch granules must be broken down, usually by heating in water with chemical additives. The incompletely hydrolyzed product of starch by acid or heat treatment or by α-amylase can be used to prepare various liquid or solid adhesives.

The common uses of starch adhesives are in producing of corrugated board and paper tube. Due to the large quantity required and it’s several advantages, mentioned below, Starch-based adhesive/dextrin play an important role in paper making industry.

Dextrin adhesives is derivative of starch. The starch is depolymerized by acid and/or heat treatment and the molecules are then repolymerized to produce highly branched structures which are soluble in water. Dextrin generally has higher solids than starch adhesives, even less water, which means they dry faster and thus support higher line speeds. As well as being suitable for bonding paper-based materials, e.g. bags/sacks and paper tube winding.

-Advantages of Starch-based adhesive/dextrin

1. Dry quickly and adhere firmly

2. Low cost

3. The viscosity is easy to adjust and easy to use

4. The add amount is saved

5. Natural environmental protection

6. Easily degradable and green regeneration
